sefu is someone i've been following for a while now. Starting with this project, his production stood out to me immediately. man knows how to chop it up. there's easy comparisons to acts like 9th wonder, madlib, mike, etc.—sample-heavy producers that find their niche in their selections.
rap-wise, sefu likes to sit close to the abstract. not quite fully there to where you're confused about what he's talking about, but enough to have you want to stop and think a bit. a strong charisma is shown without being braggy or highbrow, which I think gives him a really cool separation from his close contemporaries. in this project, he writes from a personal angle—tying himself to a theme.
"stars are born in pairs" is quoted from a 2017 cern article that suggests all stars start their life as part of a binary pair. after formation, the stars either move closer to one another into a close binary system or eventually move away from each other, as our sun's partner is speculated to have done.
he flows throughout different topics loosely—switching between recounts of relationships, blackness, loss, and growing an artistic presence. it's a personable and beautiful 30 minutes, seemingly like sefu struck gold in his sound. the recent projects haven't quite eclipsed what I feel for this one (despite their absolutely amazeeee production), but I'm always excited for the next release.
