Mon laferte with her 9th studio album! each project feels like a dip into a new realm—which is something i've always admired about her work. you can pinpoint throughout the discography different eras noting rock, cumbia, salsa, and even triphop/downtempo (as heard in her last project, autopoiética). for this go-round, it's all kinds of jazzy.
the "femme fatale" archetype is expanded on with significant nuance and vulnerability—somewhat providing a critique for where she finds herself regarding romance, fame, and health. her pen here is far more mature than within "Mon Laferte (vol. 1)," where 11 years ago similar topics were discussed.
what does it mean to be a femme fatale? is she one, and who has the right to call her so? what of the men on the other side of the fence yelling it so loudly? building past the face value of labels given, mon sings with strength for what it means to love and to have loved. she's acutely self-aware, where many passages are soaked in both sophistication and satire.
The jazzy-latin-pop sound definitely further enhances the themes—as it feels like such a natural collaboration. there's really nothing better than a saxaphone passage after belting from your soul about love. especially a belt from mon laferte, which is certifiably 10/10 every single time idc idc she can spam it as much as she wants.
Apparently she also dropped a pt.2 to this album just a couple months ago? Mhm gotta run dat.
