Thr33’s sound here feels like if chief keef leaned even further into the nerdy/geeky side of himself. Tons of video game references both in lyrics and samples. But somehow it’s also… drill??????? Like it goes hard for no reason I don’t understand. What is happening out there in North Carolina….
these albums deliver this sound unsparingly, and mostly well received to my confused ears. It’s fun, abrasive, short running, and… introspective??? On the outside, it can look superficial amidst the distorted bass and fast raps but he’s really telling stories about his family, friends, lovers, and dreams. My favorite is the last track on the deluxe—“still love.” It’s a raw ode to all of thr33’s ideals, blurted out machine-gun style. Times are tough and he just miss his lady amidst all the questionable people in his life. tight.
Something I do wish is that these topics were fleshed out further, as most of these songs come out scant. Lots of short laconic statements, which is cool for the style, but trades off vulnerability.
